Ojavik began with a quiet question: when did food become a list of additives?
The answer, for most of us, was somewhere in the early 2000s. The atta on the kitchen shelf had a vitamin chart. The dal had a polishing oil. The basmati was a year old at most, and the spices came in bright sachets with E-numbers in fine print.
We went back to the fields and to the small mills, to the women who still hand-sort pulses on cotton mats outside their homes, and we built a brand around what we found.
What "Ojavik" means
The name is two words pressed together: Ojas, the Sanskrit word for the vital, glowing energy that comes from well-made food; and Jaivik, the Hindi word for organic. Together — Ojavik.
Pure grains. Pure energy. We try to keep the promise small enough that we can actually deliver it.
How we work
Source
We buy direct from Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) and smallholder collectives — never through commodity traders. Right now that is forty-two farms across seven states. Each one is logged in our traceability ledger; each batch of grain in our mill can be traced back to its origin in under five minutes.
Mill
Stone chakkis for the wheat. Iron kadhais for the sattu. Steam-sterilisation for the spices, then a slow stone mill that never warms the bag above 35 °C. We deliberately avoid hammer mills and heat-extraction methods. They are faster. They are also why most commercial atta tastes like nothing.
Pack
Food-grade laminated pouches, nitrogen-flushed where the grain demands it. Every pack is labelled with the harvest district, the milling date, and the batch ID. Open it, and the small print is on the back.
Our promise
- No additives. Not now, not later, not in our "premium" tier. If a grain needs something added to it, we have sourced the wrong grain.
- No bleaching, no polishing, no coatings. The pulses look duller than the supermarket ones. They also taste like pulses.
- No false claims. "Cooling," "energising," "ancient" — we use these words only where the evidence is robust and the food actually delivers.
- Tested every lot. Pesticide residue, aflatoxin, moisture, microbial load. The certificate for your batch is one email away.
